Hi Barb, just read the article in The Atlantic. I’ve been doing a deep dive on GLP1’s to research a bunch for my husband. I have just finished also listening to The Dr Tyna Show (podcast) series Ozempic Done Right (5 parts). She is insisting people do strength training (lifting heavy). Curious if that’s something you’ve incorporated? If so, how is that working for you and what kind of results are you experiencing? My husband hates weight lifting but I also fear if he doesn’t do it there are going to be other health issues that arise (she speaks of these in the series). Anyway, I am very happy for you and your kids. I hope my husband can find some ease in his life. Kindly, Stephanie
Thanks so much for commenting and asking about the muscle loss. I am almost finished with the next post which is exactly about that. But I will give you a quick answer about the working out.
I did not start walking until right about mid-January 2024, which would have been just shy of 2 years on the GLP-1s. I was worried sick I had eaten my muscles alive so had a Biophysical DEXA-scan and my muscles were fine and dandy. (I highly suggest a Bio DEXA before starting GLP-1s and then every 6 months to check how things are going. Mine was $125.)
I started doing resistance training, NOT lifting weights, also right around New Year 2024. I still do not go to the gym and have zero plans to do so. I got some 1, 3, 5 lbs pretty little weights and some resistance bands and watch YouTube videos for seniors & beginners (combined, not separate) and do my resistance stuff in my room.
I just had a Bone Density DEXA… prescribed… because my calcium doesn’t absorb because of the Gastric Bypass and we keep an eye on it every year. My bone density has not changed… sarcopenia, which I have had for many years before I started GLP-1s.
Please remember, Dr. Tyna is one opinion. She also believes microdosing is the way to go. She would have a heart attack if she knew I was on 12.5/15mg (depending on availability) and needed to titrate up because my glucoses started to rise again on lower doses.
Do I think resistance training is important? Absolutely. Do I think someone 400 lbs (like I was) needs to lift weights in the gym? For goodness’ sake, walking to the front door and back is lifting 400 lbs already. When one has enough weight lost that the body can handle doing some resistance, then is a good time to start. I started with those small vegetable cans, then went to soup cans, and went from there.
I hope this helps! Much good luck to your dear husband. What a wonderful wife he has that cares so much. You’re a gem!
